Icom has announced the new ID-5200A/E, a next-generation 144/430 MHz dual-band amateur radio transceiver aimed at mobile operators, D-STAR users, and hams looking for a more modern control interface in the shack or vehicle.

Icom Inc. officially announced the ID-5200A/E in May 2026, with the radio planned for launch in summer 2026. The new model brings a large 4.3-inch color touchscreen, a waterfall display, independent controls for the A and B bands, and expanded digital voice features into a mobile transceiver format.

For many amateur radio operators, the biggest visual change will be the radio’s front panel. The ID-5200A/E uses a large touchscreen display designed to make frequency, menu, and operating information easier to see at a glance. Icom also highlights the waterfall display, which gives operators a visual look at signal activity and band conditions rather than relying only on audio monitoring or manual tuning.

The radio is also designed around practical mobile operation. Independent dials, volume knobs, and squelch knobs for the A and B bands are positioned on the left and right sides of the control head, giving operators more direct control over each side of the radio. Dedicated physical buttons are included for frequently used functions, which should help reduce menu diving while operating from a vehicle, desk, or portable setup.

D-STAR operators will likely be especially interested in the ID-5200A/E’s expanded digital feature set. Icom says the radio supports enhanced D-STAR functions including Terminal Mode, Access Point Mode, DV Repeater Monitor, and image transmission and reception. Built-in Wi-Fi connectivity, including access point capability, is also included to support Terminal and Access Point mode operation through an Internet connection.

The ID-5200A/E also supports true simultaneous dual-band reception, including FM/FM, FM/DV, and DV/DV operation. That means operators can monitor two D-STAR repeaters, listen to another repeater while in a QSO, or use V/V, U/U, and V/U dual receive. Icom also notes support for Airband receive and says APRS support is planned through a future firmware update.

Icom showcased the ID-5200A/E at Dayton Hamvention 2026 in Xenia, Ohio, alongside other new and concept products. For hams who have used or followed the popular ID-5100 series, the ID-5200A/E represents a major update to Icom’s dual-band D-STAR mobile lineup, combining a more modern display with the digital features and dual-receive flexibility many operators expect in a flagship mobile radio.

Final regional availability, pricing, and market-specific details may vary, so operators interested in the ID-5200A/E should watch official Icom channels and authorized dealers for release timing in their area.
